Last week I posted the 500pt Tau army list that I was using towards the end of last year. I designed the list to be fast and mobile (except for the Broadside, which was basically included to attract enemy fire). I reduced the Fire Warrior squads to the minimum size and crammed in as many Crisis suits as I could afford (five if you include the commander). I also armed most of the suits with assault type weapons, so that they could take down large numbers of poorly armoured troops (with mixed success).
The comments after I posted that list were very interesting, and if nothing else they go to show just how many different ways a Tau army can be built. I have been thinking over the various comments and I will be rejigging my army again in the near future. In the mean time, our campaign has escalated since the Christmas holidays and we are now playing with 600pt armies.
Here is my list. It still maintains many of the contentious elements from the 500pt army, but I have removed the Broadside suit and added a Hammerhead and a drone squad. In it’s first game, against Eldar last week, even considering some very mixed dice rolling on my part. I virtually wiped the Eldar out with only minimal Tau casualties.

Um quick question since I don't have my dex nearby...
Don't you need to have the Shas 'Ui upgrade to take photon grenades or any other wargear?
Otherwise it's a novel list; don't see many gun drone squadrons around these days!
Just checked my codex, you don't need a Shas'Ui to get the Photon or EMP grenades.
As for the drone squadron, it fitted a gap in my points that nothing else seemed to fit. So I thought I would give it a try. They have helped lay down some fire, and the jetpacks have been useful for nipping in and out of cover...
I think a single plasma rifle is pointless and overpriced at 600. Six man fire-warrior teams are to fragile to survive any amount of fire, and to few to lay down usefull fire power. Photo Grenades seem like a wast of points. If someone is assaulting your firewarriors, they are dead anyway. The gun drones while I enjoy unpopular units (I run vespid in almost every tournament I enter), I think they are points better spent elsewhere at 600 pts as well. In general, I'd adjust the list just a little, and go with this:
600 Pts - Tau Empire Roster
Total Roster Cost: 600
HQ: Commander Shas'el (3#, 101 pts)
1 Commander Shas'el, 71 pts = (base cost 50 + Hard-wired Blacksun Filter 3 + Missile Pod 12 + Twin Linked Flamer 6)
1 Shield Drone, 15 pts
1 Shield Drone, 15 pts
Troops: Fire Warrior (10#, 100 pts)
10 Fire Warrior, 100 pts = 10 * 10
Troops: Fire Warrior (10#, 100 pts)
10 Fire Warrior, 100 pts = 10 * 10
Elite: Crisis Battlesuit (3#, 129 pts)
1 Crisis Battlesuit, 43 pts = (base cost 25 + Missile Pod 12 + Twin Linked Flamer 6)
1 Crisis Battlesuit, 43 pts = (base cost 25 + Missile Pod 12 + Twin Linked Flamer 6)
1 Crisis Battlesuit, 43 pts = (base cost 25 + Missile Pod 12 + Twin Linked Flamer 6)
Heavy Support: Hammerhead Gunship (1#, 170 pts)
1 Hammerhead Gunship, 170 pts = (base cost 90 + Railgun 50 + Two Burst Cannons 10 + Disruption Pod 5 + Multi-Tracker 10) + Blacksun Filter 5
Attach the Shas'el to the crisis team and his drones will keep both units alive through turn one and avoid giving up firstblood or slay the warlord (hopefully).
