If there's one thing that makes the Tau Empire awesome it's the railgun.
Able to fly through a tank like a hot Frisbee through butter, the railgun is a range 72", Strength 10, AP 1 beauty of a weapon.
"Say, that's a nice Land Raider you've got there." - BOOM!
And that's the real beauty about it, you don't need to risk getting your face torn off by getting up close with a melta gun in order to take out the Armour 14 tanks of the game.
In fact, I had one spectacular game where my 3 railgins (2 on Broadsides, 1 on a Hammerhead) took out 3 of Marc's Ork Battlewagons on Turn 1. And I was firing at their front armour.
Cover Save Woes
In 5th edition the cover save really ruined the railgun for a lot of people. Suddenly Tau armies were only nailing enemy tanks half of the time because of 4+ cover saves.
However, that could all change with 6th edition. Apparently cover saves are down to 5+ and tanks are easier to hit too, due to being large targets.
So while we can only get a few railguns in an army right now, the railgun is still the most incredible gun in the game.
Draw a Line and Die!
If the new Tau Codex rumour about the Hammerhead railgun hitting everything in a straight line is true, then it will be a very happy day for Tau players indeed.
It would certainly encourage a very different mechanic for the army by rewarding strategies that focus on laying down lanes of overlapping fire with the mobility to strategically redeploy as required.
So just remember that the railgun is the biggest gun in the game -and for a good reason! Be sure to let your enemies know about it.
Eat Railgun - BOOM!!

1) markerlights
2) iirc the rumor indicates that the railgun goes through tanks only if the first tank explodes rather than being a line of death like blood lance/doom scythe.
iirc the railgun is only stoped at the first glancing hit... and i want to quote the StarCraft2 Helion: "Line 'em up" !
Just think how funny it would be to hit 5 different MEQ in 3 different squads and to blow up a Vidicator and Immobilise the Landraider behind it with a glancing hit <3
I'm so glad that i started Tau last year ^^
I can not wait for the new codex ( I think I am going to field 9 broadsides in an 1850 list) and then when the CSM comes out I can get out my IRON WARRIORS,,yeah baby.
IMO, there is only one "gun" better than the railgun...
It trades in range for power though, so not really suited for the Tau player.
I'm talking about Warp Lances from those pesky Zoanthropes :D
in regards to railguns and cover saves.. i've never had problems with that. with the right synergy between pathfinder's Markerlights and the railgun toting unit, you can easily knock out the entire cover save. works fairly well. heck, one game i took out a pair of monoliths with 60" shots across a woodland board using the technique. the pathfinders were dangerclose to the monolith's area effect weapon, but the mono's died before they ever had a chance to move after deep striking.
the main problem with this approach is that your forces to fit 200 points of Pathfinders+Dfish into your army for best effect (you need all 8 markerlights to ensure sufficent hits), and unless you take multiple units of them, your going to only be able to negate cover on one target at a time.
I can't say I've had many issues with enemy vehicles getting cover saves against the Railgun. This is probably due to the fact that a vehicle isn't in cover unless more than 50% of it is obscured and it is petty hard to get a large number of vehicle concealing objects to hide behind unless you're playing Cities of Death.
I'm not going to speculate on what the new rule will be, but eitehr way, I like it already.
I very rarely have problems with coversaves. I usually bring enough marker lights to remove cover from whatever my broadsides are going to shoot at...
And yes, I love railguns too.
I normally start by filling my heavy slots and then work out the rest of my army ;-)
