We're ready to start building Tau armies in time for the next Codex, but when so many models in the Dark Eldar and Necron ranges have been updated or phased out entirely, how can we know what we should buy for Tau?
I've sat down a put together a list of 'safe units' to build and paint while highlighting the units that I think will get a makeover, or might just get phased out altogether.
So if you're seriously thinking about building a core Tau force over the next couple of months, read on...
ELITES
Stealth Suits these will most probably stay the same.
Crisis Suits I believe will received a complete overhaul.
TROOPS
Fire Warriors will probably stay the same.
Devilfish - Yes will probably stay the same
Kroot will probably stay the same.
Kroot Ox will probably get moved to Finecast
Kroot Hounds will probably get moved to Finecast
Kroot Shapers will probably get moved to Finecast. I hope GW finally releases the Limited Edition Kroot Shaper holding the rifle above his head like a club. It was clearly so 'limited' that it was never released...
FAST ATTACK
Piranha will probably say the same. Here's hoping for the return of 3 in 1 boxed set.
Pathfinders I really hope get redone. Otherwise the existing models will be moved to Finecast.
Vespid Stingwings will likely be moved to Finecast
HEAVY SUPPORT
Hammerhead will probably stay the same
Skyray - Yes will probably stay the same
Broadside Suits I believe will received a complete overhaul.
Sniper Drone Teams will either get phased out or completely redone. The kit is metal and wouldn't be ideal for Finecast.
So What Am I Going to Get?
For now I will be steering clear of Crisis suits (as much as I love them) and focussing on building up a core force of Tau Firewarriors, Kroot Carnivores, Hammerheads and Devilfish transports. I might build some Stealth Suits to break it up too. But I'll hold off on Piranhas for the time being.
Otherwise everything else feels a bit 'off limits' at the moment. I've never been a fan of metal models, so if things like Kroot Hounds are coming in Finecast resin, I will be very happy.
I just plan to buy, build and paint what I can now...and then wait.
"That patient hunter gets the prey!"
What Should I Buy for Tau Now?

Looking at your list it looks pretty spot on from what I've heard. My only concern is that they wouldn't re-do the vespids and kroot, vespids especially. I can't decide whether to finish my 1k force I've already got or to totally hold off and just paint something else until March
Sniper drones are already in finecast, so you can assume those will not change in the upcoming codex. I am expecting that Crisis Suits will actually stay the same and then get nerfed while GW releases a new kind of suit for elites...you know, just so you're encouraged to buy new models...Agree with you on the rest though...but I hope that kroot get re-done and include plastic kroot hounds on the same sprue.
So, some Necron models got phased out did they?
Heehee.
Vehicles are a very safe bet. GW has a long history of keeping to the same chassis for years, witness to Rhino and the Falcon. So the Devilfish and other things based off it will be fine.
I think you are right about the Crisis Suits. As the main heroes of the Tau, and that there are variants from FW, makes me think they'll get some fancying done.
Hopefully they get rid of the metal parts for the Broadsides! Plastic or finecast would make them more stable. And something needs to be done about their delicate ankles!
I hope they do a new model for the Vespid, as I think the mini is way off from the artwork, and looks a bit naff.
Don't forget you can now use Forgeworld Piranha with rail rifles, the Attack Drones, and the special character. Really thinking of picking up the special character...
Given that we don't know anything for definite, I'm not going to let what may or may not come influence what I add to my army.
Having said that, I'm trying to only add Forge world models these days, so it's hardly a problem for me anyway.
As long as the weapons options for battlesuits don't change too much, mine will still be ok as I can swap arms on mine.
As for stuff to get, I would recommend some XV-9s and I'm about to order an XV-84 and XV-89.
Would also recommend the Finecast ethereal as a good purchase before the new codex comes out?
