It's time to settle on a Tau army list for the Grand Tournament.
Regular readers of Warhammer Tau have been very vocal when it comes to my army selection. Some think Kroot and Pathfinders are awesome, some love Piranhas and some prefer twin linked missile pods on their Tau Battlesuits rather than twin linked flamers.
But if there's one thing we all agreed upon, it's that the Tau army is struggling against the new army updates.
Not that I'm making any excuses when I get my arse kicked at the Grand Tournament. I'm not the greatest player in the world, but I give it a whirl. I'd probably be greater if I had a cheesier and more forgiving army though.
So my army for the GT has been built on experience and personal preference. For me Kroot die in droves, Piranhas are too expensive for what they do, Pathfinders are too static and even get me started on Vespid! So here is the 1500 points Tau army list I will be taking with me.
1500 points Tau army list for the 2009 Grand Tournament Heat 1
Tau Shas’el with Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, Multitracker, Hardwired Drone Controller with 2 shield drones
2 Bodyguards with Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, Hardwired Multitracker, Targeting Array
Tau Battlesuit Team
2 Battlesuits with twin linked flamers and single missile pods
(X3) 6 man Fire warrior Team
Devilfish with Smart Missile System, Targeting Array, Multitracker, Disruption Pod, Flechette Discharger
Hammerhead with Railgun, Smart Missile System, Targeting Array (comes as standard), Multitracker, Disruption Pod, Flechette Discharger
Skyray with Smart Missile System, Target Lock (comes as standard), Targeting Array, Multitracker, Disruption Pod, Flechette Discharger
2 man Broadside Team with Targeting Arrays
Leader, Hardwired Drone Controller with 2 shield drones
Thoughts
This is my 1500 points army until a new Tau Codex (whenever that may be). I can't squeeze anymore out of this army.
Yes, I still love my Skyray. Those markerlights are a god send when it comes to Lictors, taking out Battlewagons with Broadsides and making sure the Tau Battlesuit command team kills what it shoots at.
Twin linked flamer and single missile pod Tau Battlesuits have been a topic of much controversy lately. Twin linked missile pod is the way to go people say, but it only yields +1 hit on average while the single flamer is far less deadly.
It's a slight trade off between a tiny bit better at maybe glancing tanks or completely annihilating troops. I'll take the complete annihilation of troops thanks!
The Tau army struggles against hordes of armour 11-12 vehicles, so instead of worrying about them, let's just kill what comes out of the transports. That's what we're good at after all.
Tau Tournament Tactics
I'm going with the 1 tactic which consistently works. That's all the heavy support deployed safely at the back of the board while everything else comes on from reserve and counters threats...or just runs for its life.
All my victories have used this tactic and nearly all of my defeats have been when I've set up everything and lost the ability to react to my opponent's deployment.
I have 2 weeks until the Grand Tournament weekend on October the 17th, so I'd better get some more games in.
PS: If you see me or my army on the day, come over and say hi.
Please buy me a beer as well. I may need it.

This is a finely honed list for this points level. I think you've got the right amount of firepower and the right amount of bodies.
Your tactics are sound too. Keep those three devilfish in reserve and only deploy your heavies, who in my opinion are early game killers and then to lose their effectiveness as the game goes on and moving becomes more important.
Good Luck! For the Tau'Va!
my only suggestion would be to change the battlesuits twin-link flamers to just having one and adding a multi-tracker to them so you can shoot both weapons in the same turn if needed.
but i can understand your concern if you lose that vital 'to hit' roll with a flamer and have to deal with a mob of orks with just a missile pod.
oh....and wots wrong with my wonderful vespid???? not good enough for your visions of the greater good? ;-)
Oh yeah...Adam, just wanted to also add that that picture of your army you'll be taking looks awesome and well painted!
I'm still taken back by that fact you want to paint your new army/added force basic!
Do you have anything painted yet at wot you would call acceptable at a basic level? I only ask coz I think it would put your readers minds at ease if we saw a model painted in "quick production rate".
I'm busy painting Space Hulk and then Space Wolves, so no new Tau as of yet.
You have to appreciate that I can't paint an army quickly enough. I've been playing and painting this Tau army for nearly 3 years now and most of the Firewarriors were not painted by me! The same goes for the Piranhas and Pathfinders.
I've really been whittling away at the fat in my list over the past 10 months or so and, unsurprisingly, it doesn't look that different than yours.
This should do well against marines in particular.
I have yet to play Guard at my FLGS, but I'm really thinking they pose a problem for lists like ours. I'm still wrapping my head around how to handle them.
Your approach to Guard?
Good luck with the tourney and keep up the great blog!
Not to go off topic, but I am falling in love with the color scheme of these tau! What colors did you use? It looks like Valejo chocolate brown for the light parts.
I have nothing constructive to say, however, I just wanted you to know that I think you're army is absolutely beautiful. I often find myself quickly scanning over the 40k blogs on my RSS feed, but every time an image of your Tau pops up, I take a few minutes to enjoy your work.
Best of luck at the tournament!
Paul, go read the painting guides (top right navigation)
I'm not a competitive enough player to make comment on your list, it seems solid enough to me (and kinda makes me think I need more Devilfish).
However I would like to comment on the look of your tourney army...it's gorgeous. Simple scheme, executed wonderfully, and gives a very cohesive overall feel. I'd love to play across from this army, based on just looks alone!
Ever considered adding a Positional Relay to one of the 'vres or the commander? that way, you can wait to bring in some of the devilfish till the very last turn or so when you need them to nab objectives...
My FWs seem to die really easily when they sit around on the battlefield too long..
I'd like to, but I don't have the points.
Adam how much is your Shas-O worth points wise?
His Shas'el, rather?, I don't think he's allowed to post how many points stuff in the codex is worth...
Also, wut about making the Bodyguard into normal fireknife suits? essentially ur paying 20 points for +1 BS, (for being 'vre as opposed to 'ui, and for getting the targeting array)..is it worth it?
Yeah, I know. But without BS4 they're pretty worthless. They really need the boost. It's very expensive though I agree.
Hey Adam
I'm another fervant follower of your blog; so much so it's the first thing i check to see if you've updated it when i get online 8D. Anyway as for your armylist i would just like you to TRY trim down TWO(2) of your troop choices... 180x2=360pts lighter, because as we all know Troops are not one of Tau's strengths.
Imagine what you could do with all those points, i know it will hurt alot in capture point missions etc, but i would like to see one game with having that much extra dakka in your army, maybe another HQ, and as for your dislike of kroot all i can say is try 20+ of them, as most of your games involve HtH, i would go for 10 Kroot with 10 Hounds, cheap 20 models for 130pts, maybe outflank etc...
anyway i hope you try something like that because like you said in one of your earlier BatRep's, your friend could name most of your units, so it would be nice to see you go totally overboard like you did with the pathfinders & piranha's
Might sign me up a google account so i can speak up for often
And as for your dislike of kroot all i can say is read this...(you never know maybe their is hope for you after all)http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php/topic,82374.0.html#msg1171874
I think Adam has 3 firewarrior choices so that he can take a devilfish, using it as part of a fire wall.(smooth move; only it never seems to work for me, never had luck on my side)
I find that when I use Kroot these days it's just 5 kroot plus Shaper with 3 Krootox. A little point filler with 3 48" rapid fire guns.
I would personnally keep the f/w's and their devilfish
Oh earlier I asked about your HQ and got a telling off from Mr Oveson; I just wanted to know if he was close pointswise to Farsight.
Thought that maybe you might benefit from farsight(not that I rate him that much) as you have no kroot/vespid/Etherial and you have different options for Heavy choices.
But no, after that post I put up I changed my mind and think you should stay as you are with this army.
My original comment is before Pearlygates
Suprised nobody picked up my error of needing a minimum of two troop choices... so he wouldn't be able to get 360pts free, only 180+120=300pts pts and still have the min. TR requirements even though there's a 6 tau squad without a transport
As for adam's army choice i understand it all, going for a mech army,
Maybe instead of asking adam to change his army, he should just change his opponents... e.g. i dont remember you fighting a tyranid army off, or dark eldar
so ya too much space marine lovers out their ;/
At the GT you're most likely be facing SM, IG, Orks, Chaos Daemons and Tyranids "Cheese lists", so my be advise is to square off against the cheesiest of each of those a couple of time and you can't go far wrong!
Good luck!
-Kai-Itza-
I had the same O'Shovah thought, also, especially since you often play against Orks..
